about

Ballads of Steel and Linoleum represents a decade of aural exploration. In this album, conventionally noisy sounds are made musical, while instruments perform in unconventional ways. Found sounds combine with mandolin, trombone, trumpet, autoharp, and vibraphone to create rich soundscapes. These ballads reflect themes of family, home, movement, and transition.

This album has been in the works since 2007, when I first started talking with my soon-to-be EiM co-Artistic Director Matt Griffin about a piece for trombone and airplanes. Since then, I have been writing music for odd combinations of instruments and environmental sounds. Many thanks to the EiM crew for always pushing the edges of contemporary music, and for helping make this album a reality.

Ballads of Steel and Linoleum features
Matthew Griffin: Trombone on "A Low and Distant Roar"
Nigel Taylor: Trumpet on "We should do this again on a cool, crisp day"
Eric Powell: Vibraphone, Mandolin, Autoharp.

All tracks (except "Steve") recorded in the War Room (Regina and Montreal) between 2010 and 2014.
"Steve" was recorded live at "Holophon at the Artesian," May 25, 2011.

All tracks composed, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Eric Powell.
Cover art by Elise Windsor.
